An Education on Vacation!
CHINASMITH’s first Study Tour was offered in 1987. Since 1987 there have been many custom tours operated with cooperation with major China universities in Beijing , Shanghai , Kunming and Hangzhou . These programs have been offered as classes or semester break tours for both high schools and universities as well as continuing education experiences for teachers. Some have been custom designed to match a particular course outline and have instructors who travel and lecture during the tour. This itinerary will have a group leader who is a China scholar. It will cover general areas of China study and is not designed as a credit course but offered instead for the pleasure of learning will seeing a different culture.

A Study & Travel Program
DAY 1 Tuesday depart USA
Depart from any of several gateways across the Pacific and the International Dateline to Asia .
DAY 2 Wednesday arrive BEIJING
Arrive in China ’s cultural and political center. You will be met by personnel from Beijing University and transferred to the university foreign guesthouse.
DAY 3 Thursday BEIJING (B, L, D)
After breakfast, an orientation on the schedule features a visit to the Sackler Museum of Art and Archeology. This afternoon depart to Tiananmen Square , the Forbidden City ’s Palace Museum and Jinshan [‘Coal Hill’]. A welcome dinner featuring Peking Duck.
DAY 4 Friday BEIJING (B, L, D)
Morning optional Taichi boxing. After breakfast a lecture on campus on “An Outline of Chinese History”. This afternoon tour the Lama Temple , Confucius Temple and Historical Museum .
DAY 5 Saturday BEIJING (B, L, D)
Morning optional Taichi boxing. After breakfast a lecture on campus on on “The Art of Chinese Calligraphy.” Lunch downtown, then tour the Temple of Heaven . Dinner followed by a performance of Beijing Opera highlights.
DAY 6 Sunday BEIJING (B, L)
Morning optional Taichi boxing. At 10:00AM go to the local church. After church go to the Panjiayuan Free Market. This afternoon visit Yuanming Yuan, the ruins of a palace destroyed during “The 8 Powers Invasion” [Boxer Rebellion] and the Qing Dynasty Summer Palace .
DAY 7 Monday BEIJING (B, L, D)
Morning optional Taichi boxing. A morning visit to the Great Wall at Mutianyu. This afternoon visit to traditional North China courtyard houses in a ‘hutong’ area including a ride on a rickshaw near the Bell Tower . Visit the homes of local families. Farewell dinner tonight.
DAY 8 Tuesday BEIJING/XI’AN (B, L)
Morning optional Taichi boxing. Then pack and check-out of the guesthouse. Transfer for a flight to Xi’an , known for its archeological discoveries. Stay at the Xi’an Hotel. Visit to the Taoist Temple of Eight Immortals, the city markets and the restored city wall.
DAY 9 Wednesday XI’AN (B, L, D)
Morning visit to Xingjiao Temple then continue to the on-site excavation Museum of Terra Cotta Warriors. Also visit the Great Mosque. Tonight features a dinner performance of Tang Dynasty Song & Dance.
DAY 10 Thursday XI’AN/GUILIN (B, L, D)
Morning to the Small Wild Goose Pagoda where there would be an opportunity to join local people in Taichi before flying to Guilin , one of China 's most scenic cities. Stay at the Bravo Hotel. Visit Reed Flute Cave , Fubo Hill and the Jinjiang Tombs.
DAY 11 Friday GUILIN/YANGSHUO (B, L, D)
Spend most of the day on a cruise along the Li River to see the beauty of the karst rock formations. Stay in the village of Yangshuo and overnight at a guesthouse to be advised.
DAY 12 Saturday YANGSHUO/HANGZHOU (B, D)
Spend the morning exploring the unique atmosphere of this small south China river town. Then drive back to Guilin for a flight to Hangzhou , China ’s honeymoon city located on scenic West Lake . Transfer to the Ramada Plaza Hotel.
DAY 13 Sunday HANGZHOU (B, L, D)
Tour one of China ’s largest silk factories. Later sightseeing will include Lingyin Temple , famous for its Buddhist rock carvings, the Pagoda of Six Harmonies with a highlight being a cruise on West Lake .
DAY 14 Monday HANGZHOU/SHANGHAI (B, L, D)
Drive to China ’s most cosmopolitan city, Shanghai . On the way stop and explore a typical East China canal town, Stay the Bund Riverside Hotel.
DAY 15 Tuesday SHANGHAI (B, L)
Tour highlights in Shanghai include visits to the Bund, Jade Buddha Temple and the Shanghai Museum . Also visit Pudong and the Pearl TV Tower.
DAY 16 Wednesday SUZHOU (B, L, D)
Day tour to Suzhou , famous for traditional Chinese gardens and homes, includes the Garden of Fisherman ’s Nets, Humble Administrator’s Garden, and the Silk Embroidery Research Institute. Return for dinner and a Shanghai Acrobats performance.
DAY 17 Thursday Return to USA (B)
Transfer for the departure arriving home the same day you depart.
